Chapter 510 is a youth writing, tutoring, publishing, and book-making center in Oakland, California, for which I’ve been designing and creating their outreach materials as well as their student-written publications. For the purposes of this portfolio, only the outreach is shown because I wanted to focus on the change in style as the organization grew. At first, with a limited budget and a smart fundraising campaign inviting one to see the world through their lenses, the look was inspired by 3-D glasses in magenta and blue, which ran well for a while but as the center grew, it quickly became limiting—the colors are bold but also a bit jarring in the long run. With the help of an outside agency, a new look was established, still with strong and unusual colors, but ones that harmonized better.

The images above go through a sampling of nearly a decade of materials, and you’ll be able to see the exact moment the style guide changed.
