This personal exploration into angst during the nuclear age was a special project for a few reasons. Not least of them is that the nightmares shared by the author mirror quite closely those we had as pre-teens, after we watched the ABC TV miniseries The Day After, when it came out in the mid ’80s. Another reason is that the boy pictured is the son of a friend of ours, who gladly volunteered to lay still on a shag carpet, in front of a relic television set for hours on end as we shot the cover photo. No, we did not force him to watch The Day After (and suffer consequent bad dreams); the nukes were photoshopped in later.
